--------------------------------------------------------------------
Global Fresh Foods offers supply chain services for the ocean transport of fresh farmed Atlantic salmon and steelhead trout fillets in the SAF-D® System. The Company currently applies SAF-D® and manages ocean freight logistics from it's Talcahuano, Chile facility into major U.S. ports such as Miami, New York, or Los Angeles or other ports within a 30 day transit such as Europe. For destinations beyond 30 days (such as Japan) shelf life at destination may be shorter than 11 to 14 days under good refrigeration.
- For shipments to the U.S., processors must work with GFF to acquire "Green Listed" status with FDA for using SAF-D® as "a method of control" under Import Alert 16-125. (http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/cms_ia/importalert_28.html). This process can take at least 30 days.
- GFF spec boxes must be used/ordered from your preferred vendor.
- Currently GFF Spec Corrugated Cartons can be ordered via Corrupac - Contact: Camilo Fernandez - Email - cfernandez@corrupac.cl
- Additional suppliers are expected very soon.
- GFF will supply plastic pallets and deck sheets to the producers for shipment to GFF.
- Wooden pallets cannot used for SAF-D®.
- Proper chilling immediately after harvest and filleting is critical to the successful extension of freshness. Fillets, from properly harvested and chilled fish, must be individually chilled down to -1.0 to 0.0C
- Scaled-Skin-on fillets should be produced for best quality.
- Individual fillet bags must be carefully removed before packing into GFF boxes.
- When removing the fillet bags, care must be taken to prevent excess bending of the fillets which can cause gaping.
- Sixteen to 17 kilograms of chilled fillets are packed per carton (without fillet bags) into GFF-Spec, corrugated recyclable cartons containing a tear resistant liner (or double liner) containing one or more absorbent pads (with a total absorbent capacity of at least 600 grams of water).
- The liner is folded loosely over the top of the packed fillets (NOT tucked into the sides of the box or sealed) prior to applying the carton lid. The lid should close completely with no resistance from overpacking. Over packing could also result in container overweight fines on some roads in the U.S.
- Cartons must be stacked tightly on top of the cardboard deck sheet on the 40” x 48” plastic pallet. Ten (10) layers of six (6) cartons per layer are tightly stacked with layers 2 – 10 placed directly on the boxes below.
- The fully stacked pallet should then be tightly stretch wrapped or otherwise unitized for shipment to GFF. Improperly stacked pallets will have to be manually restacked by GFF resulting in extra cost and handling charges.
-
Sixty cartons per pallet will result in about 1,000 Kg per Service Module (SM). Eighteen SM's constitute a full load (~ 18,000 Kg).
- Palletized cartons should be expeditiously transported (at -1.0C) to Global Fresh Foods' cold storage facilities in Talcahuano.
- At GFF's facility GFF inspectors must confirm that fillet temperatures are 0.0C to -1.0C before accepting the load.
- The cartons are transferred to SAF-D® System SMs and the Controlled Atmosphere technology is applied.
- Eighteen SMs are then loaded into a 40' refrigerated container for ocean transport to a major U.S. port of entry.

Uninterrupted, Continuously Refrigerated Supply Chain
The SAF-D® CA environment and temperature of each SM is continuously logged at all times. Global Fresh Foods personnel monitor and manage the SAF-D® System SMs through an uninterrupted refrigerated supply chain for up to 30 days. At destination, GFF personnel release the SAF-D® environment and confirm that all FDA temperature requirements have been met and that the SAF-D® CA environment was acceptable before releasing the cartons of fillets for further distribution or sale. After release from the System, fresh Atlantic salmon and steelhead trout fillets will have an additional 11 to 14 days of their natural fresh shelf life when properly refrigerated (at 0C to 2C).
Fresh Seafood Inventorying
Global Fresh Foods technology can extend the freshness of Atlantic salmon and steelhead trout fillets in our proprietary SAF-D® System for up to 30 days, providing maximum all-natural shelf life after release from the System. With typical ocean freight voyages of approximately 16 to 20 days, fresh seafood can be inventoried for 10 to 14 days or more at a partner's cold storage facility or customer's distribution or processing center, following its arrival into U.S. ports served by the Company's Fresh Seafood Distribution Services. After release from the SAF-D® System SMs, fillets will have an additional 11 to 14 days of natural fresh shelf life (properly refrigerated) for processing, packaging, and/or distribution to retail and foodservice channels.
